Initially Skype hoped to move to a warehouse style building but opted for a more traditional space in 2 Waterhouse Square, which gave them the location and floor plate they needed to create the office they wanted for their 380 staff.
The brief was to create a working environment that would fit the range of groups and teams within Skype and their different ways of working. Appropriate space for designers, engineers and support services, all of whom work in different ways, needed to be combined with a design befitting of an expanding and forward thinking organisation.
The new ‘Chill’ area provides a central gathering space for informal meetings, hot-desking, ‘all hands’ meetings and launches. From here, other areas can be accessed easily via the new central staircase, which not only visually connects the floors, but also aids circulation. The feature pendant lighting which flows down the staircase is an abstract reference to the Skype logo and is visible from each floor.
Work areas have been designed specifically for each of the teams, creating individual neighbourhoods and combining open plan spaces or team areas. Meeting spaces range from casual break-out spaces to more formal rooms of differing sizes and configurations.
Skype was shortlisted for a BCO London and South East Awards 2014.
