NBCUniversal (NBCU) is one of the world's leading media and entertainment companies in the development, production and marketing of entertainment news and television networks.
Previously dispersed across ten floors in two separate buildings, imminent lease expiry provided an opportunity to consolidate circa 1,000 staff into a single headquarters. After assessing a number of options NBCU took two and a half floors along with a double height ground floor retail unit at Central St Giles, a new contemporary landmark building designed by Renzo Piano.
After conducting a detailed briefing process, the subsequent design seeks to promote their brand and improve communication and integration across the business, removing physical barriers and creating cross-selling opportunities across the diverse media companies operating under the NBCU umbrella. The cellular office module has been standardised to provide uniformity, equality and consistency of workplace with the number of cellular offices dramatically decreased to reduce churn costs. Importantly the design creates shared on-floor social hubs and areas to prepare and eat food in the absence of a staff restaurant.
The visitor experience is an integral part of the design and Level 3 provides a dedicated client floor with associated reception, meeting room suite and in-house catering facilities to ensure the client experience reflects NBCU's position as a leading international media company.
Space on the ground floor has been designed to accommodate two state-of-the-art screening rooms with accompanying event space and reception to enable it to operate independently for external previews and screening events.
The design takes inspiration from the entertainment industry and is largely monochromatic with pops of colour in the furniture and lighting. The creative content of the company's heritage is displayed as artwork across the floors on digital screens which unite the floors as well as informing staff and clients' of NBCU's past, present and future.
